Barneys Belted With Racial Discrimination Suit (DETAILS)
A 19 year old African-American teenager is suing trendy retailer Barneys and the NYPD after he was racially profiled accused and arrested for stealing.
“His only crime was being a young black man,” Michael Palillo, Trayon Christian’s attorney, told The New York Post yesterday.
The Barneys clerk concluded that, based on his skin color, the NYC College of Technology freshman and Queens, NY resident could not possibly afford a $329 Salvatore Ferragamo leather belt, that his Chase debit card was stolen.
Christian says he presented identification and completed the purchase but was stopped by cops as he exited the midtown flagship store. Cops told him that Barneys called them and accused him of using a fake card. He was handcuffed and taken to the 19th Precint stationhouse where police questioned and detained him for two hours. They let him go after discovering his Chase account was legit.
Christian, who used money saved from his part-time college job, and who has no arrest record, returned the belt and, rightly, filed legal papers against NYC and Barneys on Tuesday.
Barneys recently announced a partnership with Jay-Z. Wonder how that will translate with Christian’s demographic.
