Nine member, pink loving, K Pop girl group Girls Generation beat Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus and their countryman Psy in the Best Music Video category at the first Annual YouTube Music Awards last night.
The Awards, hosted by actor Jason Schwartzman and musician Reggie Watts, streamed live online; 220,000 people tuned in. When Girls’ won, the audience was silent, according to CNN.
Why there’s a YouTube Awards, we don’t know. I guess Google is trying to capitalize on MTV and its program; and the fact that most people will look at things online rather instead of cable TV.
The YouTube Music Awards nominees were based on views, likes and comments and subscriptions over the last 12 months and fans voted for the winners.
The “I Got a Boy” video features the nine members of Girls Generation in a pink house and then moves to the girls gyrating in front of random settings. They intermittently have random English lyrics, but mostly sing in Korean.
Folks are comparing them to the Spice Girls.
