WATCH: Israel’s Pogrom Against Africans (VIDEO)
Thankfully we live in an age where we can publish with whom and where we like otherwise journalists Max Bluemnthal’s and David Sheen’s Israel’s New Racism: The Persecution of African Migrants in the Holy Land, a documentary about Israeli racism against Africans in Israel, may not have been seen.
Blumenthal and Sheen were commissioned by the New York Times to create the 11 minute documentary about Africans in Israel for the paper’s “Op Doc” series. The film was made and then canned without an explanation. The Nation picked up the doc and it’s now running on YouTube.
Why did the Times kill its publication, though? Blumenthal and Sheen are experts so it was not the quality of their work that shelved the documentary. Rather, it was the content.
“We put together some shocking footage of pogroms against African communities in Tel Aviv,” Blumenthal explained to ConsortiumNews, “and interviews with human rights activists. I thought it was a documentary about a situation very few Americans were familiar with. We included analysis. We tailored it to their style, and of course it was rejected without an explanation after being solicited. I sent it to some other major websites and they have not even responded to me, when they had often solicited articles from me in the past.”
Since 2006 the number of Africans seeking asylum in Israel has increased. Some 60,000 Africans, many from Sudan, call Israel home, working as migrants. But upon arrival in the democratic nation, Africans faced persecution and discrimination; and have been branded as infiltrators by right wing politicians and activists. Blumenthal and Sheen’s film document’s this fully.
By several accounts the lives of Africans living in Benjamin Netanyahu’s Israel is tenuous. The Israeli government is building the world’s largest prison in the the Negev desert to house migrant workers because the government does not want Africans sleeping or planting roots in the cities; they instead want Israel to remain a white state. Non Jewish Africans are targeted and tormented by the state and its right wing citizens who scream, berate and confront Africans daily. Witness all this and more below.
